Shirley retired from the OSA in 2014, after 31 years working as a bioarchaeologist here, with 29 of those years serving as the Director of the Bioarchaeology Program, then called the Burials Program. Schermer authored or co-authored over 100 technical reports, articles, and conference papers. She taught archaeology and osteology courses at the University of Iowa and the University of Dubuque. Schermer conducted extensive research and work on NAGPRA issues and ancient human skeletal remains from Iowa. She played an integral role in creating the University of Iowa-Stanford Collection and in promoting an increased involvement of descendant tribal communities in Iowa archaeological issues.
